Website Design Cost in South Africa: The Real 3-Year Price (2026)

Website design cost in South Africa is only the first bill. We added 3 years of hosting, changes and SEO from published price lists. The gap is huge.

Most website quotes stop on launch day, and launch day is the smallest bill you'll get. We took the prices South African designers, maintenance providers and search engine optimisation (SEO) agencies publish on their own websites in September 2026, then added them up over three years, the way your bank statement will. The gap between the cheapest route and the priciest is more than R200 000. The build explains surprisingly little of it. This guide covers every line of website design cost in South Africa, from the first quote to the third year's invoices.

What drives website design cost in South Africa?

Website design cost in South Africa comes down to four things: how much the site has to do, who builds it, what it's built on, and what it costs to keep running once it's live.

Most published price guides only cover the first two. The summary Google shows at the top of this search says most small businesses pay R5 000 to R20 000 for a professionally built multi-page site, and that freelancers bill R250 to R1 200 an hour. Real price lists sit inside that range. New Perspective Design lists a 5 to 9 page small business site at R5 590 excluding value-added tax (VAT), and Bunnypants lists a 6-page custom site at R14 780, both as listed on their websites in September 2026.

What the site has to do matters more than the page count. A brochure site with a contact form is cheap to build. An online shop with a payment gateway, stock levels and customer accounts isn't, because a server has to do work every time someone visits.

The platform sets the running cost. WordPress runs 40.2% of all websites, according to W3Techs' content management system usage survey on 29 September 2026. Every WordPress site needs its core, theme and plugins updated, which is why South Africa has a whole market of monthly maintenance plans. A site with no plugins has far less to look after.

Then there's the part nobody quotes. Years two and three. If you already have a site and want it rebuilt rather than started from scratch, our breakdown of website redesign prices goes through that quote line by line.

How do you get a website built or rebuilt?

You get a website built in six steps: write a brief, gather the content, compare quotes, approve a design, build and test, then launch with the logins and a running plan handed over to you.

  1. Write a one-page brief. List the pages, what each one must say, and the single action you want visitors to take: call, send a WhatsApp or fill in a form. Vague briefs get padded quotes.
  2. Gather the content. Text, photos, logo, price lists. Have it ready before you ask for quotes, because a developer can't finish a page that has no words. New Perspective Design, for example, charges R990 per 1 500 words if it writes the copy for you.
  3. Get three quotes on the same brief. Ask each for the build price, the monthly price, what an extra change costs per hour, and whose name the domain and hosting account will be in.
  4. Approve a design. Most small business packages adapt a template to your brand. A custom design costs more and takes longer.
  5. Build and test. Open every page on a phone. Send a test message through every form and check it arrives. Run a speed test on the home page.
  6. Launch and hand over. The domain points to the new host, old addresses redirect to new ones, and you get the logins.

A rebuild carries one extra risk: changing page addresses. If an old web address (URL) stops working and doesn't redirect, Google treats the new page as a stranger and the rankings the old one earned can slip. A careful small business website redesign keeps every URL, or points each old one to its new home with a permanent (301) redirect.

How long does all of this take? New Perspective Design lists 7 to 10 working days for its small business package once the content is in. Agency custom builds take weeks longer. In practice, though, the calendar is usually set by how fast you can supply content and sign off pages, not by how fast anyone codes.

Step 6 is where the real spending starts. The quote ends at launch. Your costs don't.

How much does it cost to have a website designed in South Africa?

A small business website in South Africa costs R5 000 to R20 000 to build, plus hosting at R100 to R500 a month, maintenance at R80 to R2 500 a month and, if you pay for it, search engine optimisation (SEO) from about R3 500 a month.

Here's every line item, with real examples as the providers listed them on their own websites in September 2026.

Cost Typical range Published examples How often
Build yourself on a website builder R0, plus your time Wix Core: US$29 a month on a yearly plan (about R480) Monthly or yearly
Build by a freelancer or small studio R5 000 to R20 000 New Perspective Design R5 590 (5 to 9 pages, excl. VAT); Bunnypants R14 780 (6 pages) Once
Agency redesign for a small business R15 000 to R60 000 Range in Google's search summary for small business redesigns Once
Domain name (.co.za) R90 to R300 a year New Perspective Design lists renewal at R150 to R300 Yearly
Hosting R100 to R500 a month dotdigital from R299; Zoeke R350 Monthly
Maintenance and changes R80 to R2 500 a month Hikari Labs R80; Webluno R399; Digital Consulting R1 450 Monthly
SEO articles R2 000 to R3 500 per 1 000 words Juicy Designs' copywriting cost guide Per article
SEO retainer R3 500 to R50 000 a month seopackages.co.za from R3 500 (excl. VAT); White Cat from R5 000; SEOPros from R10 000 (excl. VAT) Monthly

Only the build is paid once. Everything else on that table comes back every month or every year.

What is the average cost of a 5 page website?

A 5 page website costs about R5 500 to R15 000 to build in South Africa from a freelancer or small studio. The published packages above run from R5 590 (New Perspective Design, 5 to 9 pages) to R14 780 (Bunnypants, 6 pages), so R10 000 is a fair middle. An agency will usually quote more, because it adds project management, strategy and custom design.

How much should I pay someone to host my website?

A small brochure site should cost R100 to R350 a month to host. Above R500, you should be getting something more than hosting, like managed backups, security monitoring or included change time. dotdigital sells hosting separately from R299 a month and Zoeke from R350. Some plans bundle it: Webluno's R399 plan includes 5 GB of hosting, and Hikari Labs includes hosting and backups in its R80 plan.

How much does it cost to write content for SEO?

SEO content costs R2 000 to R3 500 per 1 000 words in South Africa, according to Juicy Designs' copywriting cost guide. Monthly SEO retainers start at R3 500 excluding VAT for a local package at seopackages.co.za, which asks for a 3 to 6 month minimum term, and SEOPros starts at R10 000 excluding VAT with a 6-month minimum. Our guide to SEO prices in South Africa compares what each tier actually delivers.

What does a website really cost over three years?

A small business website costs between about R17 000 and R227 000 over three years in South Africa, and in every scenario we priced, the build is less than half of that total.

Most cost guides stop at the build. So we priced four realistic routes over 36 months for a 5 to 10 page small business site, using only prices the providers publish, from doing it yourself (DIY) to hiring an agency. Domain and email are left out of all four, because you pay for them whichever route you pick.

Scenario What you get Year 1 Year 2 Year 3 3-year total
DIY on Wix (Core plan) You build, change and write everything; hosting included R5 760 R5 760 R5 760 R17 280
Freelancer build + Webluno Essentials R10 000 build; 1 hour of changes a month; hosting included; no content R14 788 R4 788 R4 788 R24 364
Send to Site (existing WordPress site) Same-look rebuild; hosting; changes by email; up to 4 SEO articles a month R13 500 R9 000 R9 000 R31 500
Agency build + retainer + local SEO R37 500 build; 3 hours of changes a month; hosting; local SEO package R100 500 R63 000 R63 000 R226 500

The assumptions, so you can swap in your own quotes:

  • DIY: Wix lists its Core plan at US$29 a month on a yearly plan, which is about R480 at the 29 September 2026 exchange rate of roughly R16.40 to the dollar. Wix's help centre says plan prices can differ by country, so check the price it shows you.
  • Freelancer: a R10 000 build, roughly the middle of the two small business packages listed above, plus Webluno's Essentials plan at R399 a month (1 hour of changes, hosting included, no contract).
  • Agency: a R37 500 build, the midpoint of the R15 000 to R60 000 range for small business redesigns. Digital Consulting's Small Changes plan at R1 450 a month (3 hours, hosting not included), hosting at R300 a month, and seopackages.co.za's entry local SEO package at R3 500 a month excluding VAT. Its once-off setup fee of R1 500 to R3 500 isn't counted.
  • Send to Site: R1 500 a month for six months, then R750 a month, VAT included.

The chart below puts the four totals side by side.

Bar chart of 3-year website design cost in South Africa: DIY on Wix R17 280, freelancer build and care plan R24 364, Send to Site R31 500, agency build with retainer and local SEO R226 500
Three-year cost of a small business website in South Africa in four scenarios, built from prices providers listed in September 2026. Domain and email excluded.

Three things stand out. The agency bar is mostly SEO: R126 000 of its R226 500 is the local SEO package, and without it the total drops to R100 500. The freelancer route is the cheapest paid option, as long as one hour of changes a month is enough and you don't need any content. And DIY is the cheapest in rand but not in hours, because every change and every article is your evening.

Content is the swing factor. Add even one 1 000-word article a month at Juicy Designs' low-end rate of R2 000, and any scenario grows by R72 000 over three years. That single line can cost more than the build and the hosting combined.

How much should I pay for website maintenance?

Expect to pay R500 to R2 500 a month to maintain a small business WordPress site, but compare plans on what an hour of changes costs, because that ranges from R125 to R1 410 across published South African plans.

The monthly range comes from Signal Growth Partners' cost guide, which puts small business sites at R500 to R1 500 a month and WordPress business sites at R800 to R2 500. The hourly figure is ours. We divided each plan's price by the change time it includes. We haven't seen another South African cost guide publish it, and it's the number that shows what your changes really cost.

Provider (listed September 2026) Entry plan Change time Rand per hour Biggest plan, per hour
Hikari Labs R80 30 minutes R160 One plan only
Parallax Studios R185 1 hour R185 R153 (15 hours for R2 295)
Zoeke R390 1 hour R390 R375 (2 hours for R750)
Webluno R399 1 hour R399 R125 (20 hours for R2 499)
dotdigital R399 1 hour R399 R250 (4 hours for R999)
Digital Consulting R990 2 hours R495 R453 (15 hours for R6 790)
websitedesign.co.za R2 340 per 3 months 180 minutes per 3 months R780 R390 (540 minutes for R3 510)
Webdo R450 30 minutes R900 One plan only
Engage24 (excl. VAT) R1 410 1 hour R1 410 R1 053 (3 hours for R3 160)

The median entry plan works out at R399 an hour. The cheapest rates, R125 to R153, only arrive with 15 to 20 hour bundles that a five-page site will rarely use. Unused time matters too. Webdo says unused time does not roll over, while Digital Consulting carries unused hours forward for up to four months. If you use 30 minutes of a 1-hour plan, your real rate doubles.

To be fair to these providers, the fee also pays for plugin updates, backups and monitoring, so the per-hour figure is a ceiling, not a price tag. Our guide to website maintenance cost splits those parts out.

Do websites need monthly maintenance?

A WordPress website needs monthly maintenance, because its core, theme and plugins keep receiving security fixes that someone has to apply and test. A site that's built as plain files, with no database or plugins running behind it, needs far less. That difference is the main argument for a static website when your site is a brochure rather than a shop.

Why does a cheaper-to-run website load faster?

A website that's cheaper to run usually loads faster, because the plugins and scripts that need paid monthly updates are the same code that makes each page heavy.

We saw this on our own work. Raimond, the company behind Send to Site, rebuilt dcreviews.co.za, a debt counsellor review site, from WordPress and now runs it. We ran a Google Lighthouse mobile lab test on the home page before and after the rebuild in September 2026.

Measure (Lighthouse, mobile) WordPress version Rebuilt version
Performance score 75 100
Largest Contentful Paint 7.0 s 1.2 s
Stylesheets 309 KB 34 KB
JavaScript 180 KB 0 KB

Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) is the time until the biggest block of content on the screen appears. Google's Largest Contentful Paint guidance counts 2.5 seconds or less as good and anything over 4 seconds as poor. The WordPress version sat at 7.0 seconds. The rebuild sits at 1.2. The live rebuilt site now scores 98 to 100 for performance and 100 for SEO.

Here's the thing. That 180 KB of JavaScript came from WordPress and its plugins, and every one of those plugins was also a line on somebody's maintenance to-do list. Take them away and two costs fall at once: the monthly upkeep and the load time. Price guides treat speed and running cost as separate topics. They're the same topic. If you want to see which platforms get there, our list of WordPress alternatives compares them.

Is a cheap website a security risk?

A cheap website isn't a security risk because of its price; it becomes one when nobody updates it, and on WordPress nine in ten newly found security holes sit in plugins.

The numbers come from Patchstack's State of WordPress Security in 2026 report. It found 11 334 new vulnerabilities in the WordPress ecosystem in 2025. Of those, 91% were in plugins, 9% were in themes, and only six were in WordPress core. Patchstack also found that 46% weren't fixed in time for public disclosure, and that the most heavily exploited ones were first attacked a weighted median of five hours after going public.

Think about what that means for any plan that only updates plugins once a month. The gap between a hole going public and your plugin being patched can be weeks. Fewer plugins means fewer holes to watch.

Security also has a legal side. A contact form collects personal information: names, email addresses, phone numbers. Section 19 of the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) requires you to take reasonable technical and organisational measures to keep that information secure. Section 22 requires you to tell the Information Regulator, and the people affected, as soon as reasonably possible after a breach. Since 1 April 2025 those reports go through the Regulator's eServices portal. The Information Regulator's POPIA guidance sets out both sections; if you're unsure what applies to your business, ask a lawyer.

Before you sign any plan, ask four questions. How often are plugins updated? Who pays if the site is hacked? Is malware cleanup included? Where do form submissions go? Glitch, for one, includes malware cleanup only on its R1 500 Advanced plan.

DIY, freelancer, agency or Send to Site: which costs least to run?

A DIY builder costs the fewest rand, a freelancer with a small care plan is cheapest if your site rarely changes, and an agency with SEO costs the most, so the right pick depends on how often your site changes and how much content you need.

DIY builder Freelancer + care plan Agency + retainer Send to Site
Upfront R0 R5 000 to R20 000 R15 000 to R60 000 No setup fee
Monthly About R480 (Wix Core) R80 to R1 500 R990 to R6 790, plus hosting and SEO R1 500 for 6 months, then R750
Who makes changes You The freelancer, within plan hours The agency, within plan hours Send to Site, from your email
How changes are billed Your time Per hour past the plan Per hour past the plan No limit, not by the hour
SEO content You write it Extra Extra, R3 500 a month and up Up to 4 articles a month included
Main limit Your time One person's availability Minimum terms of 3 to 6 months on SEO Existing WordPress sites only; no shops

DIY suits a new business with more time than money. You rent the platform, and the monthly fee never ends, so check the real Wix website cost in rand before committing.

A freelancer with a small care plan suits a site that changes a few times a year. The risk is one person. If they get busy or move on, your changes wait.

An agency suits a business that needs strategy and paid SEO and can budget R60 000 or more a year after launch. Watch the minimum terms: seopackages.co.za asks for 3 to 6 months, SEOPros for 6, and Zoeke's retainers for 3.

A flat subscription suits an existing site that changes often and needs a steady flow of content.

How much does it cost to have a website updated?

A one-off website update costs R450 to R650 an hour from South African providers that publish a rate, and a small change billed on its own often starts at R500.

The published rates cluster tightly. New Perspective Design bills work outside a package at R450 an hour. Glitch charges R500 an hour for edits on its R500 and R900 plans, which include no change time at all. Hikari Labs prices extra changes from R500, and Juicy Designs lists R450 to R650 an hour for ad hoc copy and edits. The wider freelancer market runs from R250 to R1 200 an hour.

Money isn't the only cost. A change also costs waiting time: the email, the quote, the queue, the "can you check it on mobile?" loop. For a price change or a new staff photo, that delay can outlast the reason for the change.

If the waiting bothers you more than the rate, look at ways to get website updates without a developer: a builder you edit yourself, or a service that takes the change in plain words.

How does Send to Site fit into these costs?

Send to Site is a flat monthly care service for existing WordPress sites: R1 500 a month for the first six months, which covers the rebuild, then R750 a month for hosting, changes by email and up to four SEO articles a month.

The rebuild turns your WordPress site into a fast static site. A static site is built ahead of time as plain files, so no database or plugins run when someone visits. It looks the same, says exactly the same and keeps the same URLs. Before the switch, every page is compared with the original: the visible text, links, headings, title, description and canonical tag must match, and so must the look. On dcreviews, all 33 pages passed. You can read how the rebuild keeps your URLs and content in more detail.

After that, you change the site by emailing [email protected] in plain words, with photos, PDFs or Word documents attached if you need them. An acknowledgement arrives within a minute. The change is made on a copy of your site, tested automatically, and checked by a separate reviewer that confirms it does only what you asked. You get a preview link with a "Publish this change" button. Nothing goes live until you tap it. On our pilot site, a text change went from email to live in 3 minutes 57 seconds on 22 September 2026. Bigger layout changes can take 8 to 12 minutes.

The articles work the same way. Each one arrives by email, fact-checked, with a Publish button. You approve it, ask for changes or decline it.

What it doesn't do matters just as much. Send to Site declines WooCommerce shops, membership sites, online courses and booking systems, because those need a server. It doesn't do whole-site redesigns, which are design projects rather than changes, and it doesn't add tracking scripts. Your domain and email stay where they are. The first year costs R13 500 in total, and every year after that costs R9 000, with no setup fee and hosting included. Send to Site is run by Raimond AI (Pty) Ltd, registration 2025/964604/07, from Saxonwold in Johannesburg.

That said, if your site is new, a shop or rarely changes, the table above shows cheaper routes.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a website cost in South Africa?

A small business website in South Africa costs R5 000 to R20 000 to build from a freelancer or small studio, and R15 000 to R60 000 from an agency. Hosting adds R100 to R500 a month and maintenance R80 to R2 500, so within three years the running costs usually outgrow the build.

What is the average cost of a 5 page website?

A 5 page website costs roughly R5 500 to R15 000 in South Africa from a freelancer or small studio. New Perspective Design lists a 5 to 9 page site at R5 590 excluding VAT, and Bunnypants lists a 6-page custom site at R14 780. Agencies usually quote more because they add strategy and custom design.

How much is a website per month in South Africa?

A website costs R100 to R500 a month to host in South Africa, and R80 to R2 500 a month if a maintenance plan with change time is included. Published plans range from Hikari Labs at R80 to Digital Consulting at R6 790. SEO retainers, if you add one, start at about R3 500 a month.

Do websites need monthly maintenance?

A WordPress website needs monthly maintenance, because plugins, themes and core keep getting security fixes. Patchstack counted 11 334 new WordPress vulnerabilities in 2025, 91% of them in plugins. A static site built as plain files has no plugins to patch, so it needs far less upkeep, though content still needs updating.

How much do web designers charge per hour in South Africa?

Web designers in South Africa charge about R250 to R1 200 an hour, with published rates for one-off updates clustering at R450 to R650. New Perspective Design bills R450 an hour outside its packages and Glitch charges R500 an hour for edits. Plan-based change time works out between R125 and R1 410 an hour.

How long does it take to build a small business website?

A small business website takes about 7 to 10 working days to build once the content is ready, based on New Perspective Design's published turnaround for a 5 to 9 page site. Custom agency builds take several weeks. Gathering text and photos, then signing off pages, usually takes longer than the build.

Is it cheaper to build a website yourself?

Building a website yourself is cheaper in rand but not in time. A Wix Core plan costs about R480 a month, or R17 280 over three years, with no build fee. You do every change and write every article yourself, so the saving shrinks quickly if your hours are worth R250 or more.
