Website Redesign Prices in South Africa, and a Cheaper Option

A website redesign quote buys you a new look. But what if the look was never the problem? We collected the website redesign prices South African agencies published in September 2026, from a R4 500 refresh to R150 000 for an online shop, and set them out by type of job. We also cover a third option that sits between a patch job and a full redesign. On one real site, it cut the time for the main content to appear in a mobile test from 7.0 seconds to 1.2, without changing a word.

How much does it cost to have a website redesigned?

A website redesign in South Africa costs from about R4 500 for a light refresh to R80 000 or more for a custom rebuild, and most small and medium businesses pay between R15 000 and R60 000. That middle band comes from Viewport, a South African web agency, whose website redesign services page said in September 2026 that most small-to-medium business redesigns fall in that range.

The bottom of the market is cheaper still. Circle Media lists a refresh from R4 500 and a full redesign from R8 500, as listed on its website in September 2026. Its refresh covers a layout update, mobile fixes and a content clean-up.

Online shops sit in a bracket of their own. Viewport puts e-commerce and complex systems at R60 000 to R150 000 or more, because payment gateways and integrations add building and testing time.

Website redesign prices by type of job

Website redesign prices in South Africa depend mainly on the type of job, from an hour of edits to a custom rebuild with new features. Two local agencies, Viewport and Growth Pulse Media, publish the same four price bands. The table sets those bands next to hourly change rates and our own same-site rebuild. All prices are as listed on each provider's website in September 2026.

Read the last row carefully. The agency figures are project prices. Ours is monthly and covers a rebuild of your WordPress site with the same look, plus hosting, changes by email and up to four SEO articles a month. There's no setup fee, the first year comes to R13 500 in total, and every year after that costs R9 000.

When you compare a website redesign package against a monthly plan, ask who hosts the site after launch and what the next change will cost. Those two lines decide your real first-year bill.

The third option: rebuild the site you already have

A same-site rebuild keeps your website's look, words and web addresses (URLs) exactly as they are, and replaces the slow code underneath so the site is fast and cheap to keep current. It sits between a patch job, which fixes one thing and leaves the slow engine running, and a full redesign, which changes everything and starts at around R15 000 for a standard business site.

Plenty of sites look fine. The trouble is everything else: pages that crawl on a phone, plugin warnings, and an hourly bill every time a price changes. A new look fixes none of that. So we rebuild WordPress sites as fast static sites, built with Astro and hosted on Cloudflare Pages. A static site is a set of ready-made pages, so nothing has to be put together from a database each time someone visits.

Before the switch, every page is compared with the original. The visible text, links, headings, page title, meta description (the summary Google often shows under your link) and canonical tag (the line telling Google which address is a page's main one) must be identical, and the look must match. Old URLs keep working or redirect. Forms keep working, and your domain and email stay where they are.

What a same-site rebuild did for one real site

On dcreviews.co.za, a same-site rebuild took the home page's mobile performance score in Google Lighthouse from 75 to 100 without changing its content. The site is a debt counsellor review site that Raimond, the company behind Send to Site, rebuilt from WordPress and now runs. Google Lighthouse is Google's free, open-source tool for testing page quality, and we ran its mobile lab test on the home page before and after the rebuild in September 2026.

Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) measures how long the biggest image or block of text takes to appear. Google's guidance on Largest Contentful Paint rates 2.5 seconds or less as good and anything over 4 seconds as poor. The old site took 7.0.

Phones also download far less. Stylesheets dropped from 309 kilobytes (KB) to 34 KB, and JavaScript went from 180 KB to nothing. All 33 pages passed the page-by-page comparison before the switch, and the live site now scores 98 to 100 for performance and 100 in Lighthouse's search engine optimisation (SEO) check. Same words. Same addresses.

What pushes a website redesign cost up?

Page count, custom design, new features and content work push a website redesign cost up more than anything else. The published bands show the jump clearly: Viewport prices a 1 to 5 page redesign at R5 000 to R15 000, and a 5 to 15 page one at R15 000 to R40 000.

Line up these five things when you compare quotes:

• Pages. More pages mean more layouts to design and more content to move.
• Custom design. A template costs less than a design made from scratch.
• New features. Payments, bookings and member areas add building and testing time.
• Content. New copy and new photos are extra work, and so is carrying old posts across.
• Search protection. If page addresses change, each old one needs a 301 redirect, a permanent "this page has moved" signal. Google's guidance on site moves with URL changes says to keep those redirects "generally at least 1 year".

Two website redesign packages at R20 000 can cover very different work. Put the five lines side by side before you sign anything.

How much does it cost to have a website updated?

Having a website updated in South Africa costs R185 to R500 for an hour of changes, or R80 to R450 a month for a care plan with 30 minutes of small edits included. Here's what four local providers listed on their websites in September 2026:

• Hikari Labs: R80 a month with up to 30 minutes of minor content updates; extra changes from R500.
• Webdo: R450 a month with up to 30 minutes of small content changes; unused time does not roll over.
• Parallax Studios: R185 a month for one hour of maintenance time, up to R2 295 for 15 hours.
• Glitch: R500 an hour for content and design changes, billed as needed.

How can I redesign my existing website without starting over?

You can redesign your existing website without starting over by keeping the pages, words and web addresses (URLs) that already work, and changing only the part that's actually broken. Work out which part that is first:

1. The look is dated or off-brand. That's a design job.
2. The site is slow or hard to change. A same-site rebuild fixes speed and upkeep without a new look.
3. The words are stale. Update them page by page and leave the design alone.

When is a full redesign worth the money?

A full redesign is worth paying for when the design itself is the problem: your brand has changed, visitors can't find what they need, or the site needs features it was never built for. A same-site rebuild would copy those problems faithfully.

Some sites also need a server running behind them. Send to Site declines WooCommerce shops, membership sites, online courses and booking systems for that reason. It doesn't take on whole-site redesigns either, because those are design projects rather than changes. In practice, though, a brochure site for a plumber, a dentist or a guest house rarely needs new features. It needs to load fast and stay current.
