Wix Website Cost in South Africa: Rand Prices and Year Two

Open Wix's pricing page from Johannesburg and the prices arrive in US dollars. That one detail changes the maths. The real Wix website cost for a South African business depends on the exchange rate, VAT, a domain Wix can't sell you and the hours you'll put in yourself. We added all of it up over two years, in rand. On the cheapest plan, the biggest line on the bill isn't Wix at all.

How much does Wix cost in South Africa?

Wix costs about R3 850 to R8 830 a year for its three small-business plans, once you convert the dollar price at R16.40 and add 15% value-added tax (VAT). When we loaded Wix's plans page from Johannesburg on 29 September 2026, it showed Light at $17 a month, Core at $29, Business at $39 and Business Elite at $159. Those are yearly plans, paid in full upfront. Wix's help centre says that when your local currency isn't supported, you're billed in US dollars.

The rand figures use R16.40 to the dollar, roughly the rate on 29 September 2026. Your bank's rate on the day sets the real number, so a weaker rand makes next year's renewal dearer. Wix's listed prices exclude tax and it adds any tax due at checkout. South Africa's standard VAT rate is 15%, and the South African Revenue Service (SARS) applies it to electronic services sold by foreign companies too, so we've budgeted for it. Which Wix plan does a small business need?

Light is enough for a simple brochure site, but you need Core or higher the moment you want to take payments or bookings on the site. Light gives you 2 gigabytes (GB) of storage, two site collaborators and your own domain, with no online payments and no scheduling. Core adds payments, a basic online store, bookings and 50 GB of storage for five collaborators. Business doubles the storage to 100 GB, allows ten collaborators and upgrades the store tools.

Picture a plumber with five pages, a phone number and a contact form. Light covers that. A physiotherapist who wants patients to book and pay online needs Core, which costs about R2 700 more a year with VAT. Business Elite adds unlimited storage, advanced store tools and 100 collaborators, and most service businesses will never need it.

The free plan isn't a real option for a business. According to Wix's own plans page, you need a paid plan to connect your own domain and remove Wix branding. If you're weighing Wix against handing the whole job to someone else, we've laid out Wix compared with a done-for-you website, line by line.

What does Wix charge for after the first year?

After year one you pay for your domain, business email and any app upgrades on top of the plan, and a plan bought on sale renews at the full price. The first-year price and the second-year price are rarely the same number. Here's where the gap comes from.

• Sale prices end. Wix's billing help page says any plan bought at a discount renews at the standard rate. Yearly plans are charged up to three weeks before they expire.
• The free domain has limits. The one-year voucher comes only with yearly plans and only covers a new domain bought from Wix. It can't renew a domain you already own.
• Wix can't sell you a .co.za. Wix's help page on South African domains says you can't buy or transfer a .za domain there. You buy it from a local registrar (HostAfrica listed .co.za renewals at R109 a year in September 2026) and connect it to your paid plan.
• Email is extra. Wix says upgrading to a Premium plan does not include a business email address.
• Apps bill separately. Upgraded versions of third-party apps from the Wix App Market aren't part of any plan. They renew monthly until you cancel.
• Monthly billing costs more. Wix says yearly plans offer the savings, and monthly plans come without the domain voucher.

What a Wix website costs over two years, including your time

Over two years, a Wix Light site costs about R7 915 in cash and roughly R19 615 once your own hours are counted at R300 an hour. Nobody sends you an invoice for the hours. They're still a cost. Here are the assumptions, so you can swap in your own:

• R16.40 to the dollar and 15% VAT on every Wix payment
• a .co.za domain at about R110 a year from a local registrar
• 15 hours to build (or rebuild) a five-page site yourself
• one hour a month on changes: new prices, a staff photo, holiday hours
• your time valued at R300 an hour

Here's the thing. On Light, your time costs more than Wix does. If an hour of your work bills out at R800, the time line jumps to R31 200 and dwarfs every plan in the table. Is it worth paying for a Wix site?

Paying for Wix is worth it if you're starting from nothing, you like doing the work yourself and your hours are cheaper than a monthly fee. That describes a lot of new businesses. A sole trader launching this month, with no site, no developer and more time than cash, gets a decent-looking site on Light for the equivalent of about R321 a month, paid yearly.

Core earns its price when you need bookings or payments without hiring anyone. The editor is visual, the templates are good, and one person can run the whole thing from a laptop.

That said, Wix makes less sense if you never want to log in. The plan fee is small; the hours aren't. Owners with an existing site that already ranks on Google should think twice, too, because the design gets rebuilt in Wix's editor and any page address that changes needs a redirect to keep its traffic. How does Wix compare with a done-for-you website?

If you already have a WordPress site, keeping it on a local care plan costs less in cash than moving to Wix, while a done-for-you rebuild costs more in cash but takes the hours off your plate. That's the real choice for many owners, because they come to Wix with a slow WordPress site and a developer who bills for every small change. Here are the two-year numbers, with the owner's time valued at R300 an hour and Wix priced at R16.40 to the dollar plus VAT:

The care plan row uses Webluno's Essentials plan: R399 a month with one hour of support and 5 GB of hosting, as listed on its website in September 2026. Send to Site costs R1 500 a month for the first six months, then R750 a month: R13 500 in year one and R9 000 in year two, with hosting included and no setup fee. Both done-for-you rows add R220 for the domain you keep paying for, and assume ten minutes a month writing emails. The Wix rows include VAT; the other two are prices as listed.

Cheapest isn't the same as best fit, though. The R399 plan keeps WordPress, plugins and all, and gives you an hour a month. Send to Site costs more than Wix Light in cash. The difference buys a faster rebuilt site with the same look and web addresses, changes by email that aren't billed by the hour, and up to four search engine optimisation (SEO) articles a month that you approve before they go live. It rebuilds WordPress sites that don't need a server, so it turns away WooCommerce shops, membership sites, online courses and booking systems.

What is a disadvantage of using Wix?

The biggest disadvantage of Wix is that you can't take your site with you: Wix sites run only on Wix's servers, so leaving means rebuilding from scratch. Wix's help page on exporting a site says so plainly. You can move your domain away. You can't move the pages or the design to another host.

In practice, though, the smaller catches bite too. You pay in dollars, so the rand price moves every year. A .co.za has to live with a separate registrar. And you're the web team: every broken layout on a phone, every price change and every new photo waits for you to find the time. None of that makes Wix a bad product. It makes Wix a tool, and a tool needs someone to use it.
