Free website speed test
How fast is your website on a phone?
Type in your website address and this free website speed test shows how many seconds your main content takes to appear on a phone. You also see what is slowing the page down and how you compare with 149 working Johannesburg small business websites, from the 179 we tested. No email address needed.
What the speed test shows you
The test gives you five things, in plain words, on one screen.
Your seconds
How long your main content takes to show on a phone, and whether Google calls that good, needs improvement or poor.
Where you stand
How many of the 149 working Johannesburg small business websites in our study were faster than yours.
What the page weighs
The size of your page and how much of it is scripts, pictures, styling and fonts.
The biggest causes
Up to three things slowing the page down, with Google's estimate of the seconds each one costs.
What it runs on
Whether the site is on WordPress, and which outside services load on the page.

We also check where you show on Google and whether AI assistants mention your business, and name the three problems that cost you the most. Laurence calls to explain it. Free.
The comparison
What you are compared with
Your result is set against the 149 working websites among the 179 Johannesburg small business websites we tested, the same way, on 2 October 2026.
- The typical site took 8.2 s to show its main content
- 13 of 149 met Google's 2.5 s
- 1 of the 69 WordPress sites met it
- The other 30 of the 179 did not work or could not be tested, so they are left out
- No business in the study is named, and yours is not stored in it
Questions about the speed test
Is the website speed test free?
Yes. The test is free, you do not need to give an email address, and the result shows on the page. We ask for your details only if you want the second half: where you show on Google and whether AI assistants mention your business.
How does the speed test work?
We ask Google's PageSpeed Insights service to open your page on a simulated mid-range phone with a slow 4G connection, the same test Google's own tool runs. It times how long your main content takes to show and weighs every file the page asks for. We run it three times and keep the middle result, and if your address forwards to another one (to www, for example), we test the address visitors end up on. We then set your result against the 149 working Johannesburg small business websites, out of the 179 we tested on 2 October 2026.
What is a good result?
Google counts a page as good when its main content shows within 2.5 s. Between that and 4 seconds it says the page needs improvement, and over 4 seconds it calls the result poor. In our study the typical Johannesburg small business site took 8.2 s, and 13 of 149 met Google's mark.
Why is my result different from the last time I ran it?
The internet is never exactly the same twice, so the seconds move between runs, sometimes by a second or more. To steady that, we run the test three times and show the middle result. The band your site lands in (good, needs improvement or poor) is what counts. A result is also kept for 30 minutes, so testing the same address again straight away shows the same numbers.
Will my customers really wait that long?
Not all of them. The test simulates a mid-range phone on slow mobile data, which is harder than fibre on a new phone. It is the test Google itself uses, and it shows how your site feels to a customer on a weak signal, which is often when they are looking for a business in a hurry.
Slow result? See what a rebuild would do.
We rebuild your site to load fast, with the same look and the same words. The free audit shows what would change. Nothing to sign.
