SEO Prices in South Africa: What R1 500 to R20 000 Buys
SEO prices in South Africa run from R300 an article to R50 000 a month. Here's what each tier buys, and the minimum terms hiding in the fine print.

SEO prices in South Africa look chaotic until you ask every quote the same question: what do I actually get for the money? A R1 500 budget and a R20 000 retainer both call themselves search engine optimisation (SEO). They buy very different things. We lined up the prices local providers publish on their own websites and worked out what each rand pays for, down to the cost of a single article. One number surprised us more than the rest.
How much does SEO typically cost in South Africa?
SEO in South Africa typically costs R3 500 to R50 000 a month for an agency retainer, while a single article bought on its own costs from about R300 to R1 190 and up. Entry retainers from the agencies we checked start at R3 500 to R5 000 a month. The SEO cost on any quote depends mostly on one thing: how much work, and how much new content, the fee actually includes.
A retainer is a fixed monthly fee for ongoing work. It usually covers technical fixes, page edits, reporting and sometimes new content. The table below shows what each budget buys, with prices as listed on each provider's website in September 2026.
| Monthly budget | Example | What's included | New content | Minimum term |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| R300 to R1 500 | Mzansi Writers: R300 to R500 per 1 000 words. Content Writer: blog articles from R1 190 | Writing only | About 1 to 5 articles | None listed |
| R3 500 to R6 500 excl. VAT, plus setup | seopackages.co.za Local SEO | Google Business Profile posts, review monitoring, local rank tracking | 1 to 2 location or service pages a month | 6 months |
| R4 450 to R8 500 | Digital Consulting Essentials (R4 450); White Cat (from R5 000 and R8 500) | Technical and on-page SEO, reporting; White Cat's R8 500 tier adds content briefs | None listed | Month to month at Digital Consulting |
| R6 950 to R14 450 | Digital Consulting Growth to Leadership | Page optimisation plus content | 1 to 3 pieces a month | Month to month |
| R10 000 to R35 000 excl. VAT | SEOPros Local to Global | 10 to 50 target keywords, one press release a month | No number stated | 6 months |
| R11 500 to R50 000 excl. VAT | seopackages.co.za Organic SEO | Keywords, on-page work, backlinks | 2 000 to 3 000 words a month | 3 months |
SEO is usually the third line in a website budget, after the build and the monthly care. Our guide to website design costs in South Africa covers the first two.
What each rand buys at every SEO tier
At the retainer tiers, each new piece of content costs about R4 800 to R6 950 once you divide the fee by the content it includes, against R300 to R1 190 when you buy the writing alone. Digital Consulting's Growth plan is R6 950 for one piece a month. Its Leadership plan is R14 450 for three, so about R4 817 each.
If articles are the main thing you're after, see how our article plan works: up to four a month, each one approved by you before it goes live.
At the two ends of the headline range, the difference is plain. R1 500 buys words: one article from Content Writer, or three 1 000-word articles at Mzansi Writers' top rate. R20 000 excl. VAT buys SEOPros' National plan, which targets 20 keywords, or the Silver plan at seopackages.co.za, which includes 2 000 words of content plus Q&A optimisation.
Per 1 000 words, the gap is starker. Mzansi Writers charges R300 to R500. On seopackages.co.za's Bronze plan, R11 500 excl. VAT buys 2 000 words a month, which works out to R5 750 per 1 000 words.
That's not a rip-off. A retainer also pays for technical fixes, local listings, links and reports, and a writer does none of that. But it shows you what you're really buying. If content is what you need, a R10 000 retainer is an expensive way to get it, and comparing SEO prices in South Africa by content alone flatters the writers.
How minimum terms change the real price of SEO
Minimum terms turn a monthly SEO price into a much bigger commitment, often tens of thousands of rand. SEOPros' R10 000 Local plan has a six-month minimum, so you commit R60 000 excl. VAT before you can leave. The Local Starter plan at seopackages.co.za comes to R22 500 excl. VAT over its six months, setup included. Its Dominate plan, at R11 000 a month with a 12-month minimum and R3 500 setup, adds up to R135 500.
Shorter terms exist. Digital Consulting lists its SEO plans as month to month with no lock-in, and the Organic plans at seopackages.co.za need three months before they go month to month. Do the sum before you sign.
How much does it cost to write content for SEO?
Writing one SEO article in South Africa costs roughly R450 to R750 for 1 500 words from a writer charging R300 to R500 per 1 000 words, or from R1 190 at a writing service such as Content Writer.
The SEO content writing services we checked price by the article or by the word. The writing is the cheap part. The work around it takes longer: picking a topic people actually search for, checking every fact, finding a photo, uploading the page and getting Google to notice it. Ask every quote which of those it covers. Content Writer, for example, lists keyword selection and proofreader supervision in its price.
Then there's your time. A draft you have to rewrite isn't cheap at any price.
Keep content and upkeep apart, too. Your monthly website maintenance cost pays for updates, backups and small changes. Maintenance plans are priced around change time, not new articles, and an SEO retainer won't fix your contact form.
What 4 articles a month add up to in a year
Four articles a month add up to 48 articles a year, and each one is a new page that can answer a question your customers type into Google.
Priced per article, that volume gets expensive fast. At Content Writer's starting price of R1 190, 48 articles cost R57 120 before anyone publishes them. At R450 to R750 from a freelance writer, it's R21 600 to R36 000.
Forty-eight pages won't all rank. Some take months. Some never will. That said, each one is another chance to be the answer, and they link to each other and to your service pages.
Send to Site includes up to four articles a month in its website care price. That's R13 500 for the first year, which also covers rebuilding your site as a fast static site, and R9 000 a year after that. Hosting and changes by email are in the same price. If you also need link building or a managed Google Business Profile, that's what the agency retainers above are for.
How Send to Site's article workflow works
Send to Site picks each topic from live search data, writes and fact-checks the article, emails you the whole thing with numbered paragraphs, and publishes it only when you tap Publish. The diagram below shows each step.
Topics come from DataForSEO search data and from what your site already covers, so you don't get three articles on the same thing. Each article is fact-checked section by section. Claims about law and money are hedged rather than stated as advice. Each one gets its own photo.
The email carries the full article. To change paragraph 6, reply and say so. If you don't like the topic, decline it.
You get up to four a month, with one waiting for your answer at a time. Once an article is live, the page is checked and submitted for indexing.
Articles you read before they go live

See my article planCan ChatGPT write SEO content?
Yes, ChatGPT can draft SEO content, and Google allows AI-assisted content as long as it's accurate, useful and not churned out in bulk to game rankings. Google's guidance on generative AI content says to "focus on accuracy, quality, and relevance", and warns that generating many pages without adding value for users may break its spam policy on scaled content abuse.
The risk is in the gaps. A chatbot doesn't know what your site already covers, which questions your customers actually search, or whether the rand figure it just wrote is true. It states a wrong price as confidently as a right one.
Google's questions for people-first content start with this one: does the content provide original information, reporting, research, or analysis? A raw chatbot draft rarely does.
Send to Site uses AI-assisted writing too, and we'd rather say so. What surrounds it is the difference: topics from real search data, a fact check on every section and your approval before anything goes live. You're the last editor.
What to ask before you sign an SEO quote
Before you sign an SEO quote, get four things in writing: how much new content you'll get, whether VAT is included, the minimum term, and who approves what goes live.
- How many new pages or articles a month? Some plans name a number. Others promise a content strategy and stop there.
- Is VAT included? SEOPros and seopackages.co.za quote prices excluding VAT, so add SARS's standard VAT rate of 15% before you compare.
- What's the total commitment? Multiply the monthly fee by the minimum term and add any setup fee.
- Who signs off the content? You know your business. An article about it shouldn't go live without you reading it.
In practice, though, the first question does most of the work. A quote that can't tell you what gets published each month is hard to judge at any price.
Is SEO still worth it in 2026?
SEO is still worth it in 2026 if your customers search before they buy, but a ranking now earns fewer clicks than it used to, so what you pay per article matters more.
A Pew Research Center study of Google searches by 900 US adults in March 2025 found that people clicked a regular search result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% when none did. About 18% of the searches in the study showed a summary.
Here's the thing. Those AI summaries are built from web pages, and Pew found that 88% of them cited three or more sources. A page that answers a question clearly can still be the one that gets quoted. Sites Send to Site rebuilds let AI crawlers such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot read them.
SEO makes less sense for a business that gets all its work from referrals and can't take on more. For everyone else, the real question is what you pay for each useful page. Not sure where your site stands today? A free website audit checks its speed, Google visibility, AI visibility and content.
